Reishi
Overview
Reishi is a woody polypore mushroom long used in East and Central Asian traditions as a supportive tonic. Preparations differ substantially — powders, hot-water extracts, and dual extracts are not interchangeable.
Documented traditional context
Documented in classical East Asian materia medica as a supportive, calming preparation traditionally taken as a decoction over long periods.
Human evidence — Human evidence for the ingredient
A limited number of small human studies have examined general well-being outcomes with dual-extracted Reishi preparations. Findings are heterogeneous and cannot be generalized.
Early research — Early or preclinical research
Laboratory studies describe compounds such as triterpenes and β-glucans; these mechanistic findings do not establish human effects.
What is not established
Not established: disease prevention, treatment of any diagnosed condition, immune 'boosting' claims, or comparability across preparation methods.
Allergens and general cautions
Mushroom allergen. Avoid if allergic to fungi.
- May interact with anticoagulant medicine.
- Consult a qualified professional if you are on prescription medicine.
